Teachers, being the core source of knowledge and understanding in society, play dependable roles. Maniriho Theophilus from Riviera High School says, “Teachers are very important in directing, guiding, and shaping students in their daily activities, this becomes part and parcel of their lives and can bring fundamental changes into students’ lives and the society at large. “Through motivational counseling and encouraging learners to embrace religion as the foundation of their success, Bible teachings, for example, Proverbs 9:10 and Psalms 111:10 state that ‘The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom can help trigger their minds toward religion’,” he says. Maniriho says it is important to provide students with enough reading material including Bibles, Qurans, hymn books, religious journals and praise and worship books. This will enhance their spiritual lives and establish a strong foundation of discipline, which eventually yields good results in their academics. Also, there is need for well stipulated timetables that establish a clear classroom routine. Teachers, and the school administration, should ensure the use of timetables. These rules and consequences should be posted in classrooms so that students are aware of what is expected of them, and the consequences of their actions. Teachers should not forget to be exemplary. “Teachers must be good examples and role models to their students. They should grow in their profession by organising religious retreats, liturgy clubs, Scripture Union Clubs and seminars to increase students’ interests and academic maturity,” he says. Like parents, teachers should also find out the hobbies of students and try to incorporate religious affairs in their daily lives. They can provide necessary guidance on how important religion is to their day-to-day existence.
