The 2018 Huye Rally will take place on the weekend of June 23-24 in Huye District, Times Sport has learnt. Kobil Rwanda are the main sponsors of this year’s edition. According to organisers of the two-day motorsport event, Kobil Rwanda will provide fuel for all the competitors. For a third year running, the rally will feature freestyle motocross to captivate crowds. The annual competition, which mostly attracts participants from Uganda, Burundi and hosts Rwanda, is part of the National Rally Championship. It is organised in memory of the late Claude Gakwaya, one of the best rally drivers the country has ever produced. He passed away in a motor accident in 1986. “This year’s rally will be special, bigger and more thrilling than any previous edition. For the first time, we have got a fuel sponsor and motocross freestyle races are back,” Christian Gakwaya, the president of Rwanda Automobile Club (RAC), told Times Sport yesterday. In a separate interview on Monday, Kobil Rwanda country manager Paul Munene said they were happy to associate with the event, adding that “after the June 23-24 event, both parties will sit down and discuss the possibility of a long-term partnership.” This year’s event is expected to be contested by a total 15 drivers, one more than the 2017 edition when 14 cars took part. Uganda’s Mussa Kabega is the Huye Rally title holder. editorial@newtimes.co.rw
