The National Paralympics Committee (NPC) of Rwanda has launched a new sport – wheelchair basketball for the disabled. The new discipline was launched on Thursday at NPC gymnasium at Petit Stade Amahoro, in Remera. Speaking at the launch, NPC president Jean-Baptiste Murema revealed that it took longer to introduce the sport because of equipment challenges, but he was glad the sport is finally in the country and now the focus is shifted on its development. Murema further explained that the programme is underway to encourage the creation of many teams, both in the male and female categories, before considering to initiate a national championship. On behalf of the Ministry of Sports and Culture, the NPC’s Head of Talent Detection, Florent Habyarimana, reiterated commitment to develop the sport from grassroots level and promised all possible support from the ministry in the process. The game is played by people with different physical disabilities that are unable to play in able-bodied sports. It is estimated that over 100,000 people play wheelchair basketball worldwide, from recreational proposes to professional heights at club, national and international stage. editorial@newtimes.co.rw
