THE LOCAL volleyball governing body has confirmed a total nine teams so far to compete at this year’s Genocide Memorial Volleyball tournament – scheduled for June 9-10 in Kigali. The nine teams who have already registered for the two-day tourney are; APR, Gisagara, REG, UTB, Sky (Uganda) Espoir (Congo Brazzaville) and Tanzania’s Faru club in men’s category. In the women’s category, only two teams have confirmed their participations so far; Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB) and APR. According to Christian Hatumimana, the Secretary General of Rwanda Volleyball Federation (FRVB), the registration is still open until May 20 and a lot more teams are expected to register. The annual tournament is organized in honor of volleyball players, coaches, administrators, fans who were killed during the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. The event has been organized since 1995. The competition was initiated by former Rwanda international Antoine Sebalinda after his brother Dominique Sebalinda was killed during Genocide, alongside other national team players. The volleyball fraternity counts over 50 members to have been lost their lives in the genocide. Rwanda Governance Board, RGB, has sponsored the competition to a tune of Rwf4.5 million.
