The Association of Kigali Women in Sports (AKWOS) in partnership with districts is seeking to empower women in peace building, gender equality, and leadership skills through sports. The Training of trainers (TOT) drive will be held in form of workshops and they will involve training of teachers and students on conflict resolution, gender equality and leadership skills through sports. The objective is to help plan, review and chart the next steps in the implementation of gender sensitive aspects in sports in terms of conflict resolution. Felecite Rwemalika, the AKWOS founder said that this is done to help support women. “We are working with Kvinna till Kvinna as the main sponsors as they also have the same objectives. We want to empower women through sports,” Rwemalika said. Peace building events shall be conducted through sports tournaments, dialogue, storytelling and other creative activities. In schools where peace building clubs exist, they will be re-enforced and established where they don’t exist. The major aim is to raise confidence in young girls in public speaking, innovation and active participation on daily activities without fearing or being intimidated by their male counterparts. Empowering of women gives them safe space to meet and talk and has had a great impact on their confidence, she said. The drive started from Rubavu and Musanze districts and will continue in other districts.
