Rwanda joined the global community on Monday, March 11, to celebrate Commonwealth Day with a focus on environmental resilience and aquatic sustainability. The nation highlighted the pivotal role of youth in driving climate action and conservation efforts. During the event at Nyandungu Urban Wetland Eco-tourism Park, the Minister of Environment, Jeanne d’Arc Mujawamariya, emphasised the significance of wetlands and underscored the vital role they play in maintaining environmental balance and sustainability. ALSO READ: Commonwealth day 2024: Uniting for a stronger future Describing wetlands as “nature’s masterpiece”, Mujawamariya highlighted their function as a preserve for diverse plant and animal species and natural filters purifying water sources. “In times of heavy rains and floods, wetlands act as unsung heroes, absorbing and storing water to protect communities from devastating floods,” she said. Mujawamariya called upon the youth, addressing them as “nature's guardians”, to recognise the power they hold in climate action. She urged them to understand the importance of wetlands and take action to protect and rehabilitate these ecosystems, ensuring a sustainable future for generations to come. On his part, the British High Commissioner Omar Daair commended Rwanda’s leadership during the time of heading the Commonwealth. He acknowledged the country’s drive and energy, particularly in addressing climate issues and empowering the youth. Daair emphasised the Commonwealth’s unique opportunities, especially in climate action and youth engagement. Delivered by Daair, His Majesty King Charles III’s message on the 75th Commonwealth Anniversary acknowledged the significant progress made by the Commonwealth since its establishment in 1949. He highlighted the family of free, independent nations and emphasised the common ambitions for a better future, and the strength derived from shared perspectives and experiences. The King acknowledged the diversity within the Commonwealth, recognising it as “a great strength.” He stressed the need for collaboration in addressing global challenges, including climate change, loss of nature, and socio-economic changes. His Majesty highlighted the importance of understanding each other’s perspectives and working together to find solutions. The King underscored the unique focus on youth within the Commonwealth, acknowledging their creativity, innovative skills, and hard work, even in challenging circumstances. He expressed hope that the energy of the youth would shape and safeguard the common future.
