A suspected drug trafficker was arrested on April 29, in Nyamagabe District after tried to traffic about 10 kilogrammes of cannabis. The suspect, 28, had wrapped the narcotics around his body in an attempt to beat security, police said. He was aboard a passenger service vehicle from Rusizi heading in the direction of Nyamagabe. “A resident in Rusizi District, where the suspect boarded the vehicle, noticed that he was nervous and his body was abnormally bulging and he decided to alert the Police,” Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Emmanuel Kayigi, the Southern region police spokesperson, said. “Along the way, passengers in the vehicle also got similar suspicions, and also called Police. A checkpoint was mounted in Kitabi where the vehicle was stopped, the suspect identified and searched, and cannabis weighting about 10kg was found wrapped around his waist,” he added. The suspect has since been handed over to Rwanda Investigation Bureau (RIB) officers for further investigations, he said. “We understand that wrapping of the contraband around the body is one of the means traffickers use to attempt to beat security. There are other tricks like women carrying them at the back like babies or under their veils; we are able to know all these tricks because of the good relations with citizens who give us information,” he explained.
