Fifty rugby players have been invited to attend a one-day training, assessment and condition exercise that will take place today at Utexrwa ground in Kigali. Majority of the players are from the eight domestic rugby clubs which feature in the MindSky national rugby league. The purpose of the one-day clinic according to the national rugby federation (RRF), is to give the national technical director Claude Aime Ezoua an opportunity to evaluate and assess the condition and fitness status of the players. Rwanda Rugby Federation Secretary General Tharcisse Kamanda told Sunday Sport that out of the 50 players, 35 players will be selected to start preparations for the Africa Bronze Cup slated for next month. “The clinic will help us select players for the national team, Silverbacks which we want to prepare for the Africa Bronze Cup 15s that will take place in Cape Coast-Ghana from May 9-12,” Kamanda said. Rwanda’s opponents during the four-day event are Lesotho, Mauritius and hosts Ghana. Both Lesotho and Ghana will be making their first appearance at the competition. The winner in the competition will progress to the Silver Cup and the winner in that tournament earns a ticket to the Gold Cup that serves as qualifiers for the Rugby World Cup. Kamanda noted that the camp will form an important part of their preparations for the Ghana competition. The final squad to Ghana will be announced a few days before the team departs for the games. Rwanda will be featuring in the games for the second time, as hosts in 2015, the Silverbacks finished last. editorial@newtimes.co.rw
