As we celebrate International Women’s Day this year under the theme “Invest in Women: Accelerate Progress”, it’s crucial to reflect on the intersection of women’s empowerment and online safety. In today’s digital age, where connectivity knows no bounds, women are not only leading progress but also facing unique challenges in the online sphere. Online respect is the cornerstone of a safe and inclusive digital community. However, the reality is that women often face the harshest effects of online disrespect, harassment, and cyberbullying. Behind the screen lies a world where hurtful comments and language can deeply impact women’s mental health and well-being. At Get Safe Online Rwanda, in collaboration with the National Cyber Security Authority Rwanda (NCSA) and the Ministry of ICT and Innovation, we are committed to addressing these challenges head-on. This International Women’s Day, we’re championing women’s voices and shedding light on the importance of fostering online respect to empower women in the digital space. Imagine a world where every woman feels safe and respected online – where their voices are heard without fear of intimidation or harassment. It’s not just about combating cyberbullying; it’s about creating a supportive environment where women can thrive, learn, and connect without barriers. Through our collaborative efforts, we’re driving conversations around digital empowerment and online safety for women, whether facing up to the challenges of disrespectful behaviour or equally prevalent and harmful issues like fraud and identity theft. From promoting inclusive language to providing resources for reporting abusive behaviour, we’re paving the way for a more equitable online experience. This International Women’s Day, let’s leverage technology to uplift and empower women. Let’s champion online respect as a fundamental principle of gender equality and progress. Together, we can create a digital world where every woman’s voice is valued, respected, and heard. Invest in women. Accelerate progress. Join us in building a safer, more inclusive online community for all. Brian Nkongori is Ambassador, Get Safe Online Rwanda; Sarah Sawrey-Cookson is Communications Director, Get Safe Online.
