Sonia, one of Rwanda’s leading female disc jockeys, will leave Kigali for Kampala, Uganda, on Friday morning where she is expected to perform at an International Women’s Day show. The event, dubbed ‘Take Over Friday’, will take place on March 8 at the Nomad bar, hosted by socialite Sheilla Gashumba, who has been hosting big events in East Africa. ALSO READ: DJ Sonia lands continental awards nomination This is the second time the DJ will perform in Kampala, following her 2023 show that attracted hundreds of Rwandan music lovers. According to Sonia, it is an interesting move to have Rwandan DJs invited to grace concerts not only in the country, but even at major events in the region and across the continent. “It is valuable to have local DJs being considered for different concerts, which is an advantage for the whole industry, especially people in this career. I invite all Rwandan music lovers in Kampala to experience home-made sounds in a live set.” She also urged more female players to join the music mixing industry as they celebrate International Women’s Day. DJ Sonia’s performance in Kampala comes a few days after being nominated at the Youth Excellence Awards (YEA) in the DJ of the Year category against the likes of Ghana’s Sta and Sena, among other DJs from across Africa. Despite disruptions caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, she is now one of the best disc jockeys in town, gracing some of the biggest stages in the country.
