PM Ngirente calls for global action to reduce plastic production

Prime Minister Edouard Ngirente has called for a global commitment to reduce plastic production to sustainable levels, and the establishment of a dedicated fund for implementation. He made the call during the sixth Session of the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA) in Nairobi, Kenya, on February 29 where he represented President Paul Kagame. He highlighted the limitations of national efforts alone in combating environmental pollution, stressing the need for collective action. Referring to the “Nairobi Spirit” adopted during the fifth UNEA, Ngirente urged members to build upon previous resolutions and commitments, particularly the plastics treaty resolution co-authored by Peru and Rwanda. He sought support for the “KigaLima” diplomatic conference, aimed at accelerating progress towards a plastic pollution-free world. ALSO READ: UN urges new focus on environment and economy In his address, Ngirente called for effective, inclusive, and sustainable multilateral actions to address climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution. He underscored the importance of international cooperation in overcoming global environmental challenges, emphasising the critical role of the multilateral system. Highlighting Rwanda’s commitment to environmental agreements, Ngirente stated that Rwanda is a signatory to over 16 multilateral environment agreements, with full compliance to their obligations through effective monitoring and domestication. Ngirente concluded by urging the assembly to demonstrate the power of multilateralism in delivering science-based solutions to the planet’s most pressing environmental threats.
