If it is bait, Rose will not bite
Rose Kabuye will be home for Christmas. This is welcome news for her family and friends, who, this Christmas were facing the possibility of an empty chair at the family table. The fact that Rose Kabuye has been allowed to leave French territory, despite having been indicted on ‘terrorism” charges by judge Jean Louis Bruguiere, is a very loud messages that her charges are flimsy, unfounded and vindicate Rwanda’s consistent position that the charges were politically motivated. From past experiences, people suspected of involvement in terrorist acts are kept behind maximum security walls and not given time off for good behavior as a Christmas gift. The French justice system could be forgiven for wasting their taxpayers’ money chasing after an elusive rainbow in the horizon, but what legacy do they leave their peers in the EU on the value of universal jurisdictions?
