WESTERN PROVINCE NGORORERO — The head of the National Social Security Fund of Rwanda (NSSFR) in Ngororero district, Gervas Uzabakiriho, has urged workers to always verify their retirement savings. He was speaking at a one day workshop to sensitise workers on the benefits of their retirement savings, in Ngororero district last Friday. He said that SSFR has previously faced challenges of solving some workers’ claims after their employers remit less money on their accounts. “This problem has been rampant. We have been receiving many complaints from people saying they have little savings on their accounts but we realised some of you don’t make a follow up on this matter,” he told participants. The participants blamed the problem on unscrupulous employers who don’t respect the rights of their employees. Uzabakiriho warned that workers who fail to verify their savings properly could end up getting ‘empty envelopes during their retirements.’ “You will not be surprised to get little amount or even none after spending decades working hoping that your bosses have saved for you. You need to find out yourselves,” he advised. Marie Chantal Uwiringiyimana, an accountant at a health centre in Ngororero, observed that some workers fail to present their social security cards to new employers after shifting to other jobs. “There are some who acquire jobs and forget to present their cards. They keep hoping that their savings are deposited with SSFR and finally fall into wrangles with employers yet they are responsible for their problems,” she said. During the workshop, participants were briefed on the history of SSFR and its vision of helping Rwandans get a brighter retirement. Ends
