Sunday: FinalGisagara 0-3 REG Third placeUTB 3-0 IPRC-South Rwanda Energy Group (REG) Volleyball Club clinched the inaugural Gisagara pre-season tournament after beating hosts Gisagara VC in straight sets 3-0 on Sunday at Gisagara Gymnasium. REG won the first set 25-21, Gisagara fought hard in the second set but fell short as Jean Paul Mana’s team also claimed it 29-27 before sealing victory in the third set 25-23. University of Tourism Business and Technology Studies (UTB) defeated IPRC-South 3-0 in the third place playoff. After winning the two-day tournament, REG coach Mana said attention now turns to the Heroes’ Day tournament, which is scheduled for this weekend before the new season gets underway on March 3 and not February 3 as earlier planned. “We wanted to use the tournament to test our players and our game plan. We have seen that we are good at and not, but there are some mistakes which we will need to correct before the new season starts,” said Mana. However, Gisagara head coach Fidele Nyirimana, who was missing one f his star players Nelson Murangwa through injury, said that, “The tournament has shown us where we stand, there is some work we still need to do before saying we’re ready for the league start.” En-route to the semi-finals, REG beat Gisagara 3-1 and APR 3-2 in Group A, while Gisagara won 3-1 over APR 3-1 and in Group B, UTB beat IPRC-South and KVC 3-0 respectively to finish top. IPRC-South defeated KVC 3-2 to finish second. In the semi-finals, Gisagara walloped UTB 3-0 while REG overcame IPRC-South 3-0. editorial@newtimes.co.rw
