I struggle to see distant objects

Dear Doctor, Recently, I developed a problem with my eyes. I have realised that I can’t see things properly, especially that are a bit far from me. At the age of 28, I don’t know if it’s normal or if it is something to worry about. James Dear James, The problem in seeing far at 28 is not uncommon these days, but it indeed is a cause for worry. The most common underlying cause for visual problems at this age is eye strain. This comes from using electronic gadgets for long hours continuously and includes T.V., computers and mobile phones. While watching say a computer screen for a long time continuously, the eye muscles get strained. Due to the fatigue, they fail to adjust to see things better, which manifests as blurred vision. This condition if left unchecked can progress slowly, where one cannot do without eye glasses. Prevention lies in avoiding eye strain. After working for an hour or so on computers or watching T.V. , eyes should be given some rest. This can be done simply by moving out for about 10 minutes. One can also close his/her eyes and cover them for few minutes with hands so that eye muscles can relax. Avoid unnecessary texting on the cell phones. Working in poor illumination also strains the eye. Hence it is necessary to see that the room is adequately lit while working. Light should focus on the computer screen or work at hand and not fall behind it. It can be due to a refractive error. Due to excess curvature of the cornea, images of far objects are not focused clearly and seem blurred. This is the most common refractive error in a young adult and is known as myopia. It is hereditary but is also attributed to excess use of near sight as with electronic devices. Uneven curvature of the cornea can also lead to trouble in seeing objects clearly. These refractive errors can be corrected by suitable eye glasses, contact lenses, laser light or surgery.A diet deficient in vitamin A and B. complex can weaken eye muscles, affecting far vision. Premature cataracts, diabetic retinopathy glaucoma, macular degeneration are some medical disorders that affect vision. Chronic infections of the eyes or injuries affect clarity of vision, causing blurred vision.
