WESTERN PROVINCE RUSIZI — Four employees of Bank Populaire, Nyakabuye branch have been arrested and detained at Kamambe Police Post for allegedly stealing over Rwf6 million. Denys Habiyaremye, an auditor, Cesarie Mukayiranga, a cashier, Epiphanie Nyirandinabo, also a cashier and Simon Pierre Bugingo, a cleaner were arrested on Monday December 15. Police, say they arrested the group after getting reports that they were planning to resign and run away after getting involved in fraudulent activities. Speaking to The New Times in an exclusive interview on Monday, Marie Rose Uwingabire, the bank’s branch manager, said the quartet swindled the money by withdrawing it from clients’ bank accounts. She said the scam came to light following several complaints from the bank’s clients to the effect that money was missing in their accounts. “Following an investigation by a team of auditors from Bank Populaire Kamembe branch it was noticed that the four stole over Rwf6 m from several clients’ accounts. We are still doing our best to ascertain the exact amount of money which they took,” Uwingabire said. Speaking from the police station, one of the suspects, Mukayiranga, admitted to the charges, saying they have been swindling money from fixed accounts holders. She said, “I know and agree that we did wrong but I also ask for forgiveness to release us in order to look for ways of paying back the money.” Ends
