Editor, RE: “Has dowry lost its traditional meaning?” (The New Times, November 18). In agreement with the motion. The writing is on the wall, dowry in Rwanda has lost its customary meaning. Sadly, the whole marriage system is bound to fail. The process leading up to marriage, right from dating and giving dowry to wedding ceremonies, has become mega commercial business in which investors are making good profits. The family has abdicated its role and authority leaving the bride and groom to face these attendant challenges on their own. To add salt to injury, families yearn for flashy marriage events without due consideration for the financial costs. Any interventions are welcome – the sooner the better. John
