District receives 100 exotic cows

NORTHERN PROVINCE GICUMBI — The Livestock Development Project (PADEBL) on Thursday donated 100 Frisian cattle to Gicumbi district. PADEBL is an organ in the Ministry of Agriculture working to increase milk production in the country. The cattle were imported from Uganda and received by district officials at the Gatuna border post. The district vice Mayor for Social Affairs, Ildephonse Butera said the donated cattle would be distributed to all the 21 Sectors of the district as part of government’s cattle stocking programme of One cow per family. “Priority will be given to Sectors with few Frisian cattle such as Manyagiro, Rushaki and Mutete, they will be given 10 Frisian cattle each, while other Sectors would share the remaining cattle,” said Butera. The animals are a fulfilment of a promise made by PADEBL to Gicumbi district during the district Farmer’s Day celebrations held at Gicumbi stadium mid this year. During the celebrations, PADEBL hailed the district for promoting livestock farming to eradicate poverty and malnutrition among local communities. Ends
