SOUTHERN PROVINCE HUYE — Thousands of new National Identification cards (ID) remain uncollected in most Sectors of the Huye district, officials have said. This was revealed during a district security meeting held on Wednesday. According to Sector officials, the reluctance in picking the ID’s is blamed on poverty and negligence. “Many residents complain that they cannot raise Rwf500 required to receive the new National Identity card,” said an official from the Mbazi Sector. In contrast however, reports indicate many other people who paid for the ID’s have not collected them. Reacting to the reports, the district Mayor, Aimable Twagiramutara who chaired the meeting urged Sector leaders to devise mechanisms for the distribution of the ID’s and to identify needy people in their communities who may require financial aid. Meanwhile, it emerged at the meeting that some Sector officials have been implicated in swindling money collected from the ID project. According to reports, money received from the issuing of the new ID’s has not been accounted for. Kigoma Sector was cited among the Sectors in the scam, and the district has commissioned an investigation into the matter. During the same meeting, it was revealed that 57 crime cases were reported in the past month and many culprits were charged for being ‘idle and disorderly.’ Local leaders were asked to be vigilant especially during the approaching festive season.
