A religious association for communication based in Rwanda has organised a reading competition for children aged between 10-13. The competition aims to instil the culture of reading among young children through the scriptures. Dubbed “Bible Quiz Challenge”, the contest is organised by Christian communication Organisation in partnership with League pour la lecture de la Bible and Spin Creations. According to Nicodem Nzahoyankuye, the event’s coordinator, they decided to start the competition to encourage young Christian children to devote their time to reading religious publications, especially the Bible. Nzahoyankuye said the initiative was developed after a recent survey conducted by the Christian communication association showed that a big number of children are dedicating their time to social media and watching films at the expense of reading helpful books. A total of 300 children from three districts of Gasabo, Kicukiro and Nyarugenge will take part in the event slated for August 11-15. The awards ceremony will be held on September 3 at New Life Bible Church in Kicukiro District. The organizers are hopeful that once the contest is scaled up to other parts of the country, the culture of reading among young children will grow. “We want to prepare a future generation that is well educated, inspired, motivated and able to take over religious responsibilities once their fathers, mothers and elders have retired,” Nzahoyankuye said.
