Don’t push it!

I’m a woman and so I feel bad for the Saudi woman who was arrested for simply wearing a short skirt. Like I always say, in 2017, no one should get arrested for dressing how they want when we have terrorists and other vile criminals roaming the streets. That said, I think when you’re a certain age and live in a certain place, you owe it to yourself to try not to push boundaries or be ready to face the consequences. Looking at the viral video of the woman in question, it’s evident she knew what she was doing. You can tell from her sultry poses and the way she was strutting around that she wanted attention and unfortunately for her, that drew the ire of the authorities. Here’s why I think she was wrong. She had the incident recorded. According to some reports, she says the video was shared without her consent which I can empathize with because without the video, there would be no evidence hence no case but then again, why would you visit a historic site dressed inappropriately according to the laws of the land? As the saying goes, when in Rome… Like many feminists, I wish Saudi women and others elsewhere, where women are compelled to cover-up had more freedoms and dressed however they wanted. But it’s not the case at the moment and until such freedoms are granted, you just have to fall in line rather than court trouble. I was a teen once and had some choice words every time my Mum said I couldn’t wear this or that as I’m sure many parents did only to have their daughters talk back or defy their advice. In hindsight, you don’t wear tight leather pants and 6-Inch heels to go check on your grandparents just like you shouldn’t bear your cleavage in Church. It’s just not the right thing to do and you may think it’s a good look but is wearing see-through tops really okay in a place of worship? Like I said earlier, when you’re a certain age, you’re in position to make these judgments. I remember having to nudge a girl sitting in the pew ahead of me once. Her thong was showing and the guys next to me were openly staring so I tried to save a “Sister” from further embarrassment. Unfortunately, she couldn’t cover-up because she was wearing an even shorter Top and so couldn’t pull it down over her pants. Over time, you learn that if you’re wearing a short skirt or dress, it’s inevitably going to shift even further when you sit down and remember you have to stand up and sit down at intervals during the Service so just keep that in mind when selecting your Church outfits so you don’t cause unnecessary distractions. And where you know certain people or places observe certain norms, don’t go out of your way to be provocative. If for instance you love your alcohol but are visiting a country where it’s banned, don’t smuggle it in and go ahead to indulge in a public place because you’ll get in trouble.
