Forward Frank Lomami scored the lone goal as Espoir FC sealed a crucial 1-0 victory against AS Muhanga to close the gap at the top of Group B in the match that closed the first round of the Second Division at Rusizi Stadium on Saturday, January 27. Both teams played a balanced game, but Muhanga struggled to cope with the pitch conditions at Rusizi stadium making it easy for Espoir to take control of the game. Despite conceding an early goal, Muhanga fought hard pushing for an equalizer but the home side held their nerves until the halftime break. After recess, Espoir changed their strategy and chose to defend in order to avoid conceding a goal while also playing on counter-attacks. Abdul Mbarushimana’s men pushed hard but they couldn't find the back of the net. Instead, Espoir could have made it 2-0 as the referee awarded them a penalty in the 88th minute after substitute Gilbert Munyeshyaka was fouled in Muhanga's penalty box but Jimmy Kibengo's missed it as his shot hit the cross bar. With this victory, Espoir finished the first round of the second division league in second place with 29 points, two points behind Group B leaders Vision FC. AS Muhanga, who have played a game less, are third with 26 points but they reclaim their second place should they win their last fixture against 13th placed Esperance FC.
