SOUTHERN PROVINCE MUHANGA — Local leaders in the Muhanga district have reaffirmed their commitment to fighting HIV/Aids in their respective families and communities. They resolved this after an open discussion on the HIV/Aids scourge held at the cultural centre last week. The discussion attracted over 100 participants who included district staff, cell and Sector leaders in the area. During the event, participants were briefed on various issues concerning the disease including prevention measures. Committing themselves to be exemplary, the leaders pointed out that the fight against Aids starts with behavioural change and participation in voluntary counselling and testing (VCT). The district Mayor, Yvonne Mukakwasuku urged the participants to be vigilant in fighting the scourge, take compulsory VCT services and pass on the lessons learnt to members of their community and their workmates. In a joint resolution, they agreed to take part in VCT by January 17 next year and to carry out subsequent monitoring and evaluation on the lessons learnt. The participants also appealed for more training on HIV/Aids, pointing out that it was vital to routinely hold open forums on the realities of living with the virus and fighting the Aids pandemic.
