Côte d’Ivoire legend Didier Drogba believes things have gone totally wrong with the Elephants in the ongoing 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) and it is time they restructure and move on a correct path. The hosts were handed a 4-0 humiliating defeat by Equatorial Guinea at Stade Olympique in Ebimpe on Monday, January 22, to finish in third place in Group A, just behind leaders Equatorial Guinea and Nigeria. Now, their qualification to the round of 16 stage hangs on a thread as they have to pray for results in other Groups so that they can grab one of the four tickets for the best third-placed teams. ALSO READ: Elephants off to winning start in AFCON We will have to get back to work, not only asking the right questions, but also making the right decisions for football and only football because today a nation like Côte d’Ivoire cannot organise such a competition and, of course, get eliminated so early on, Drogba told the press. But in this manner, there is a real problem. Côte d'Ivoire last hosted the competition in 1984. They were at the time dumped out of the group stages after defeating Togo and losing to Egypt and Cameroon who went on to win the title.
