Rwanda’s Celestin Musabyimana is still Cecafa representative on the Caf Executive Committee with two more years still to run on his mandate. This confirmation comes as contrary to earlier reports that the former Ferwafa vice president’s place in Caf is up for grabs in the next election scheduled to be held during the Caf Congress in February, 2009 in Lagos, Nigeria. Musabyimana was elected as Caf Executive Committee member in January 2006, and his mandate along with the other sitting members. “How could anyone come out to say Rwanda will not have any contribution to Caf’s decision making? “I am still a Caf Executive Committee member until 2011, and am there on Rwanda’s ticket though I represent the entire (Cecafa) region,” acknowledged the ex-Ferwafa VP in reaction to the earlier reports, he described as ‘baseless’. The Confederation of African Football is made up of six zones all which are listed in article 13 of the its statute, and all have the right two (2) members on the confederation’s Executive Committee. According to article 22 on the composition of the (Caf) Executive Committee, the term of office of the President and members of the Executive Committee shall be four (4) years. Half of the Executive Committee shall be re-elected every two (2) years.” Currently, zone 5 has Musabyimana and Burundi’s Moses Bangayine as its representatives; however, there are three candidates vying to unseat the latter in the next election. Burundi football federation boss Lydia Nsekera, Hussein Fadoul (Djibouti) and Magdy Shams El Din (Sudan) are vying for the one position up for grabs in February elections. Revised statute A revised statute for the Confederation of African Football (Caf) was approved by the body’s extraordinary general assembly in May, 2004. According to the revised statute, elections for the Caf presidency and the executive board will now be organised in the year following every Cup of Nations tournament. Ends
