EASTERN PROVINCE NGOMA — An official from the National Unity and Reconciliation Commission (NURC) has warned Rwandans against harbouring genocide ideology if the country’s goals are to be achieved. Deo Nzabonimpa, made this call recently during the closing of the unity and reconciliation week at the province. The function took place at the Anglican Church of Rwanda-Kanazi (E.A.R) in the Sake Sector, Ngoma district. He advised residents to work hand-in-hand to fight the genocide ideology which he described as “a bad seed planted by the past regimes” that led to the 1994 Genocide against Tutsis - in which about one million people were killed. “It’s therefore a must that we fight its ideology so that we don’t experience what we went through in the past,” he said. The week was marked under the theme: “Fight for unity and reconciliation in your performance contract.” Nzabonimpa also urged residents to fully engage in developmental activities in order to eradicate poverty in their families and the country in general. Francois Niyotwagira, the district Mayor called on churches to lead the campaign against ethnic divisions in the country. He told the residents to actively engage in developmental activities by starting small income generating activities as a strategy to poverty reduction. The event that started with a mass prayer was organised by E.A.R Kibungo Diocese. The diocesan bishop, Josias Sendegeya, who led the mass said that unity and reconciliation is based on the word of God, and urged all those who believe in Him to denounce genocide ideology, which he said is a disgrace to God.
