University of Rwanda’s College of Education (UR-CE) handball club has pulled out of the national championship, according to the Rwanda Handball Federation (FERWAHAND).The federation president Theogene Utabarutse confirmed that UR-CE withdrew from the league due to lack of resources to sustain the team in the championship.“UR-CE have officially informed us (FERWAHANDA) that they are withdrawing from the national championship, and much as it’s sad to see a team pull out, there is nothing the federation can do about it. Lack of resources is the biggest challenge that most teams are faced with,” he said.Utabarutse added: “We call upon the newly elected National Olympic Committee (RNOSC) leadership and the Ministry of Sports and Culture to do something (about financially struggling clubs), otherwise it will affect the sport in the future.”In 2015, Gicumbi Handball Club unexpectedly opted out of the league because of financial problems, two years after winning the title.UR-CE’s pullout reduces the number of teams in the league to 10. They were in 9th position having managed only two points.editorial@newtimes.co.rw
