I get episodes of blurred vision

Dear Doctor, For about three years now I have been experiencing episodes of blurred vision that last about 3 minutes. My work involves using a computer daily and I am wondering if that is the cause or not. How can I correct this condition? Pierre Dear Pierre, How old are you? Is the blurred vision associated with headache, itching, redness, e.t.c. other eye problems? The power of accommodation of eye muscles reduces as they weaken with age. Therefore when one strains to see near objects, the vision becomes blurred. The eye strain and weakening of muscles occurs more with use of computers and working in artificial lights as in closed modern buildings. Alcohol and tobacco can damage the nerve responsible for vision, therefore resulting in blurred vision. Onset of cataract (lenticular opacity) also causes blurred vision as rays for vision cannot pass properly through opacity in the lens. Those having diabetes, having direct exposure to sun are more prone to develop cataracts and that too from a young age. Corneal opacity due to some trauma, inflammation and degeneration of the retina (screen on which image of an object is focused and then transmitted to the brain for interpretation) also causes blurred vision. Uncontrolled diabetes and high blood pressure tend to damage the retina. Usually blurred vision makes the eyes susceptible to infections. This happens because the individual rubs his eyes frequently to see better and germs are introduced through contaminated hand . If you are above 40 years, it is advisable to use reading glasses. The number can be suggested by an optometrist. Avoid using computers for long hours continuously. Make sure that adequate light falls on the screen of the computer and not behind it. After working for an hour or so give a break to the eyes. This can be done by simply closing the eyes for few minutes with palms Alternate is to move in open space and let the eyes wander far. Similarly do not watch T.V. for long continuously and that too from close distance. A diet containing green leafy vegetables, nuts and whole grains is beneficial to strengthen the eye muscles. Avoid alcohol and tobacco. Specific exercises exist to strengthen the eye muscles. If done regularly they would definitely be helpful. If you suffer from hypertension or diabetes, it is advisable to keep them controlled with suitable dietary measures and medicines.
