Hayatou remains unopposed for Caf seat

No Rwandan nominee on CAF Executive Committee The long-serving Caf president Issa Hayatou has been endorsed unopposed to run again for the top seat in African football. The 62-year-old Cameroonian is standing for re-election in the forthcoming elections on to be held during the Caf Congress in February, 2009 in Lagos, Nigeria. Hayatou has been at the helm of African football for 20 years. After being elected to the Caf presidency in 1988, Hayatou has enjoyed the loyalty of most of Africa by ensuring that each national association president had a place on one of Caf’s standing committees. His biggest success has been to increase the continent’s number of World Cup finals places from two in 1990 to five in 1998. Rwanda has also benefited from Hayatou’s management as there were chosen to host the 2009 U-20 African Youth Championship set for January 18-February 1. However, no Rwandan has shown interest to run for a slot to the Caf executive committee but three regional football associations’ presidents are vying for the one seat to represent the Cecafa region. They include Burundi’s Lydia Nsekera, Hussein Fadoul (Djibouti) and Magdy Shams El Din (Sudan). Rwanda’s Celestin Musabyimana has been a member on the outgoing Caf executive committee and his decision not to seek re-election will see Rwanda not contributing to the decisions taken by the continental football body. Ferwafa president Brig. Gen John Bosco Kazura is a member of the youth development committee. Other candidatures for positions on the Caf/Fifa executive committee include: Mohammed Raouraoua (Algeria) and Gamal Jaafari (Libya) for North Africa, Patel Suketu (Seychelles) and Kalusha Bwalya (Zambia) for South Africa and Adoum Djibrine (Chad) and Leo Ababe (Gabon) for central Africa. Amadou Diakite (Mali) is unopposed for West Africa while Slim Chiboub (Tunisia), Mohamed Raouraoua (Algeria) and Hani Abou Rida (Egypt) will contest for the Fifa executive committee seat. Ends
