Mukunzi pledges strong comeback after knee injury

The National Volleyball team captain Christopher Mukunzi is hoping to return to action next month after a horrific knee injury he sustained in May. The 27-year-old volleyball star suffered a meniscus tear while at his former club Payas Belediye club in Turkey before he was recruited by Bulgaria first division side, VC Marek Union-Ivkoni. The left-attacker, who has since then operated on, has been promised by his new club doctor, that he will be ready to return to the pitch in January. “I want to thank my team for everything they did for me during my surgery and I hope to come back much stronger. I have already started working on my fitness so that in January I can be able to play normally and be ready for the competitions,” Mukunzi said The former Kigali Volleyball Club (KVC) player turned professional in 2011 when he joined Libyan side Tarsana Club. He later played for Blida Club of Algeria, Al Arabi Sports Club from Qatar, Algerian side El Fanar Ain-Azel Club and Turkey (Payas Belediye Sport Club). He is one of the few Rwandan players who have since joined professional ranks outside the country that includes Lawrence Yakan Guma (both Oita Miyoshi club of Japan), Placide Madison Sibomana (Qatari side Al-Gharafa Sports Club). Others are Nelson Murangwa who joined his country-mate Fred Musoni in Finland’s first division side Liiga Riento from Danish side, Middelfart Volleyball Club. editorial@newtimes.co.rw
