Catholic apology a sham

Editor, RE: “Govt: Catholic apology for role in Genocide inadequate” (The New Times, November 24). Yes, the apology is grossly inadequate. Because if some clergy, including bishops that were representing the institution, could participate in the killings, how can the institution be assumed clean? Also, did the institution ever try to stop anyone under its jurisdiction during the time the people were being butchered, most of them inside their houses of worship after being lured to take refuge there for protection? And there was never a single notice to the parishes, like this one that the bishops are circulating now, to condemn the act and asking the participating Catholic faithful to refrain from the inhuman crime. Never! If the apology was genuine, why didn’t it come out either during the time of the Genocide against the Tutsi or immediately after it, and not after two long decades? It is a meaningless apology — the establishment is only trying to act clever in the hope of getting themselves off the hook and to lessen their guilt. Donart
