Ombudsman anti-injustice drive reaches Musanze

We can stop corruption by reporting suspicious cases to relevant authorities, the Ombudsman, Aloysie Cyanzayire has said. She was addressing residents of Musanze District on Wednesday during the launch of a two day anti-injustice campaign in the district. The annual Ombudsman reports show that district injustice campaigns launched in 2010 have so far recorded 11,343 cases across the country of which 7764 were solved on spot with the participation of local leaders and residents. During this week’s Musanze event, 264 complaints-mostly related to property-were received, 144 were resolved while 88 were referred to the district to be resolved within a specified timeframe given by the Ombudsman office. At least 32 complaints will be handled by the Ombudsman office. The Ombudsman said that citizens should know their rights especially the law governing persons and family since family-property related complaints are among the most received at the Office of the Ombudsman. Cyanzayire decried the culture of residents running from one institution to another over simple cases which can be resolved through arbitration, saying it wastes time and resources. “You may find a complainant spend Rwf3 million over a case of a lost cow worth Rwf100,000 because he doesn’t want to lose the case,” she said. Anastaste Habyarimana, a resident of Muhoza sector in Musanze District commended the campaign, saying it takes the Ombudsman to the grassroots to address people’s concerns. Since the beginning of 2016-2017 fiscal year, the anti-injustice campaign has reached Ngororero, Gisagara, and Kamonyi districts. The campaign will be taken to Nyamagabe next.
