Rwanda to send four teams to 2017 World Cross-Country meet

Rwanda Athletics Federation (RAF) has revealed it will send four teams to the 2017 Athletics World Cross-Country Championships set to be held on March 23 at Kololo Ceremonial grounds in Kampala, Uganda. RAF secretary general Johnson Rukundo told Saturday Sport that Rwanda will participate in the biennial championships, although he did not say which athletes will represent the country, arguing it is too early to tell. “We will take all the four teams if the budget allows (U-20 men and women as well as senior team men and women teams). The final list will be out a month prior to the competition. There will be various trial races for selection purposes,” Rukundo said on Friday. The Ugandan capital won the right to host the competition beating Manama, Bahrain, although the results of the voting were not announced. The event is expected to attract over 700 athletes and 200 journalists, according to media reports in Uganda. Before he retired in 2014, former IAAF president Lamine Diack announced that Uganda will host the championships next year. During the last edition in the Chinese city of Guiyanga , Rwanda was represented by four athletes, including; Pontien Ntawuyirushintege, Jean Marie Uwajeneza, Felicien Muhitira and Eric Sebahire.
