Transport fares lowered

Transport fares have been lowered with effect from November 13,. This comes after several meetings were held between the Rwanda Utilities Regulatory Agency (RURA) and the public transporters body ATRACO due to the steady decline in global fuel prices. A statement from RURA reveals that the new fares should have gone into force since November 13. The government in October reduced fuel prices by 4.8%. This translated into pump prices falling from Rwf 924 to 880 for Petrol and from Rwf 924 to 870 for Diesel. However, that reduction did not effect any tangible change in transport fares or even the souring food prices. Even after further reductions in fuel prices; Rwf 880 to 870 for Petrol and Rwf 870 to 756 for Diesel, public transport fares did not change, to the surprise of many in the country. After a meeting held last Friday, Jean Claude Mvuyikongo, Director of Economic Affairs in RURA said that the government was looking for a possibility of reducing transport fares. And after Wednesday’s meeting, Mvuyikongo said, “We have reached a resolution which has to be submitted to the board for confirmation.” “I am not empowered to make a public announcement on the matter, but it’s just a matter of time before the general public is made aware of the new fares,” he stressed at the time. The news in the reduction of public transport fares should be welcome to many Rwandans. Accordingly, this was after a careful analysis and conclusion that the reduction in fares will not affect transport companies due to the steady decline in costs of petrol and its products.
