There is a saying that when a neighbor begins cutting down his fence, you lend him a machete. In other words, you do not get in the way of a person who wants to self-destruct. That is exactly what France is attempting to do – as one of our regular columnists termed “flogging a dead horse”. So Rwanda should oblige them and buy them a whip. They are only sinking deeper into ridicule. In attempting to resurrect something its own judiciary buried a long time ago only exposes how far they are willing to go in the quest for cover up. If they thought that by continuously bringing up the Habyarimana affair will intimidate Rwanda into submission, they have knocked on the wrong door. In fact, one wonders why France and a section of its guilt-ridden officials have not picked any lessons from the past. They live in a delusional world that the ropes they managed to pull in some of their vassal states can be extended to Rwanda. In more than two decades, and with all their resources, they have failed in their attempts to bring this country to its knees. And, they have failed miserably. If anything, their continuous failures have reinforced their losing of face on the world stage. So as the French officials willingly bring down their walls, Rwanda should stay close by and even generously offer them a hand. The skeletons in the cupboards will not remain hidden forever and it will only be a matter of time before France’s deep involvement in the Genocide against the Tutsi is fully exposed.
