NORTHERN PROVINCE BURERA — Over 100 orphans drawn from six Sectors of Burera district have received certificates after completing six-month training in various vocational skills. The orphans many of whom were school dropouts acquired skills in welding, carpentry, tailoring, soap making and knitting. They were also offered lessons on micro project formulation, HIV/AIDS and how to prepare fundable projects. The training was organised by ASSIST-Rwanda, a child rights advocacy and Aids prevention organisation- with funding from the Global Fund. During the pass out, Emmanuel Shemakokera, the President of ASSIST-Rwanda, asked the youth to utilise the acquired skills for self help and to support their families. Meanwhile, the orphans formed five cooperatives where they would operate and those with similar skills were grouped to facilitate their working relation ship. The youth were promised technical equipment worth Rwf2million to purchase sewing machines and other work tools. Ends
