'Masters of Dirt' freestyle motocross coming to Rwanda

South African motocross riders Nick de Wit and Scott Billet will be in Rwanda to compete in the first ever freestyle FMX motocross, which will run concurrently with the Huye Rally, scheduled for October 15-16. According to Eric Gakwaya, one of the organisers of Huye Rally, which is the 5th round on the National Rally Championships, the motocross event will be the first of its kind in Rwanda. “We will have two of South Africa’s best motocross riders coming to Rwanda and the reason we are staging it in Huye is because we want it to coincide with the Huye Rally, which is aimed at remembering the late Claude Gakwaya. The event will also have ten motocross riders from Rwanda,” said Gakwaya. During the exhibition, which will be done at night, the freestyle motocross riders will showcase their gravity-defying stunts during the two days and Gakwaya says, the aim is to attract just as many fans as possible. Nick de Witt, 36, started riding in 1996 before switching to FMX freestyle in 2002, according to his profile, while his partner Scott Billet, who is still 20, began riding when he was five years old and then got involved into freestyle competition at the age of 13. ‘Masters of Dirt’ have been performing sell-out shows across Europe, Africa and Asia for the past decade. Freestyle motocross (also known as FMX) is a variation on the sport of motocross in which riders attempt to impress judges and fans with jumps and stunts through routines on staged course consisting of multiple jumps during shows and competitions. editorial@newtimes.co.rw
