Mixed fortunes for Rwanda as Kenya rule 2016 FEASSA Games

Rwandan teams registered mixed results while hosts Kenya dominated the 15th edition of the East African Secondary Schools Games (FEASSA) as the regional event came to an end in Eldoret over the weekend. Volleyball: In the girls’ category, St Aloys de Rwamagana dropped out in the preliminary round while College Indangaburezi lost to Lubulu of Kenya 3-2 (23-25, 25-11, 24-26, 25-11 and 15-10) in the battle for third place. Kenya’s Kosirai won gold after beating compatriots Soweto 3-1 (25-22, 22-25, 25-16 and 25-15). Rwanda’s APAPEN lost to Kenya’s Malava 3-0 (25-16, 25-20 and 25-18) in the boys final. Last year, hosts Rwanda denied Kenya the titles and it was a sweet revenge for the Kenyans. Basketball: APE Rugunga dethroned Burundi’s ETG Nyakabiga as the boys’ champions with 85-72 win in the title game. Nyamwasa Bruno and Ndizeme D’endome put on a spectacular display, scoring 26 points and 17 points respectively as the Nyarugenge district-based school, which was knocked out at the group stages during last year’s games held in Huye, Southern Province picked a win. In the girls’ category, Kaya Tiwi Secondary School of Kenya lifted their maiden title after a hard-fought 54-51 win over Burundi’s Lycee Du Lac Tanganyika in the final. Handball: Kenya’s Kimilili beat compatriot St Peter 30-20 to claim the boy’s title while Kamusinga from Uganda overpowered Mbogo 26-16 in the girls’ final. Rwanda’s Hanika TSS (girls) lost to Kamusinga in the last four while Kigoma boys’ team was beaten by Kimilili 25-18. In the 3rd-place playoffs, Kigoma was beaten by Kibuli SS 27-21 and Haniki lost 26-18 to Uganda’s Sega. Rugby: 15s Kenya’s Kakamega High School were crowned champions after defeating Hanna (Uga) 15-9 in the gold medal match whereas Uganda’s Namilyango SS beat Bungoma (Ken) 19-10 to claim the bronze medal. Football: Rwanda’s GS Remera won the girls football title after a 5-4 victory in post-match penalty shootouts against Kenyan national inter-schools champions St John’s Kaloleni. The two sides had battled to a 1-1 draw in normal time. Kenya national youth team striker Mwanahalima Adam missed her penalty having scored her team’s late equalizer, to send the tie to penalties. Mukeshimana Amothee has given GS Remera the lead on the hour mark. ES Mutunda dropped out of the preliminary round while Remera Rukoma lost to Uganda’s Masaka SS in the semis. In boys grouping, College Inyemermihigo and Hankia TTS could not get beyond the group stages. Kenya’s Barding Secondary School won the boys’ football title after beating 10-man St Mary’s Kitende of Uganda 1-0 in the final. The win ended Kenya’s 14-year wait for the coveted football title as the Siaya-based school finally managed to end Kitende’s dominance. Barding beat Kibuli SS of Uganda to advance to the final whereas Kitende upstaged Kenya’s Bukembe in the other semi-final tie. editorial@newtimes.co.rw
