EALA to hold special sitting in honour of slain Burundi legislator

Hafsa Mossi The East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) will on Thursday hold a special sitting at its headquarters in Arusha, Tanzania in honour of Hafsa Mossi, a Burundian member of the regional legislative body who was assassinated last week. Mossi, who is a former Minister for East African Affairs in her home country, was at the time of her death the head of the Burundian delegation to the assembly. “The Speaker of EALA called for the meeting in accordance with Rule 10 (2) of the Rules of Procedure of the House,” reads part of a statement from the assembly. The statement indicates that EALA communicated the notice of the Special Sitting via a dispatch from the Clerk, Kenneth Madete. The deceased legislator, who was the chairperson the assembly’s Women’s Caucus, was shot by unknown assailants on July 13 in Eastern Mutanga in Bujumbura. She was elected a Member of the East African Legislative Assembly in June 2012. She is also a former producer and journalist with the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC).
