KCC to spend Frw2.3bn on sewage management

KIGALI - Kigali City Council (KCC) will by the end of this year have embarked on a multi-million strategy aimed at ridding the city of sewage problems, an official has said. Dieudonne Rumaragishyika, the vice mayor in charge of Finance and Economic Development, said KCC has already approved three million euros (approximately Frw2.3 billion) from Nordic Development Fund for the comprehensive task. In the recent past, Kigali has been overwhelmed by smelly drainage systems and poorly managed sewage treatment plants mainly due to badly-planned buildings in the city. “We are going to use these funds to deal with upcoming water problems along newly constructed roads like the Giporoso – Kabeza and the Kigali (Genocide) Memorial Centre -Kigali Independent University (ULK) roads. This work is beginning at the end of this year,” Rumaragishika said on Tuesday. He dismissed claims that KCC has not done much as far as poor drainage systems are concerned. “The city has been constructing proper sewage drainage systems in Nyarugenge, Kimihurura, and Nyarutarama,” he explained. In Kicukiro, one of the districts that constitute the city, a drainage system that links Kanombe Sector to Niboyi and Amahoro National Stadium will be constructed using part of the grant. This comes after Kicukiro Mayor William Ntidendereza said early this month that his district had already forwarded four sewage disposal systems to KCC for urgent attention. Ntidendereza said that the district was financially constrained to handle the magnitude of the sewage systems. Ends
