Public health sector: Get to the bottom of doctor absenteeism

Editor, RE: “Who will diagnose doctor absenteeism?” (The New Times, June 20) This was a commendable job by the writer, to probe this issue further. Personally, I thought the minister’s tweet was shooting the ministry and the hospital in the foot but it exposed a worry that should be talked about. How does the minister find out now about a problem that has seemingly persisted for long? Why is the director general (of Kigali Central University Hospital/CHUK) only promising to probe now an issue that has been happening for many years under his watch? This is about people’s lives! Poor administration and neglect, at both the hospital and the ministry, or any party involved, should not in any way be tolerated…hope to see action that will not only stop at CHUK but at all public health facilities. Inem ************************* But did you really expect the minister to keep quiet after finding out many doctors were absent? I can bet she has very good reasons to tweet about the situation she found at the hospital. Let’s give her the benefit of the doubt and wait patiently for the findings of the investigation. The lady works hard to make sure the health sector is great and following the gains our country has made in the health sector, trust me, she is doing many things right. Of course, there are few things to improve here and there ... But, at large, our health system is generally great. Sara L
