V-ball: APR buoyant ahead of Genocide memorial tourney

APR volley club head coach Sammy Mulinge is in bullish mood ahead of this year’s Genocide memorial tournament to be held on Saturday and Sunday in Kigali. Mulinge is optimistic about his team’s chances even as he is aware of the threat posed by several teams. The tournament is expected to attract teams from DR Congo, Kenya, South Sudan,Uganda and hosts Rwanda. Last year APR lost in the final 3-2 to archrivals Rayon Sports and will be keen to win a trophy they last landed in 2011. “We have assembled a very good team and they are ready for the challenge owing to the fact that they have shown much resilience in training and in during the league games,” Mulinge said. “We are facing good sides which have vast experience but we equally have a good group of talented players who are hungry for success. The tournament will leave a positive impact on the team,” he added. The Kenyan-born added: “APR are among the best teams in the tourney and with our best players available, I believe we will reach far (in the tournament).” Over 20 teams have confirmed participation in the Genocide memorial tournament. Rayon sports and Rwanda Revenue Authority are the defending champions in the men and women’s categories, respectively.
