High school students urged on role in decision making

Students should be given an opportunity to play a role in decision making regarding the issues that affect them. The remarks were made by Erica Gateka, the founder of IAmHer Rwanda, last week, during a debate held at Wellspring Academy in Nyarutarama, Kigali, that was organised for different high schools in Rwanda. The debate was aimed at engaging young high school club leaders in finding solutions to issues that affect students, especially girls. Held under the theme “Voices of the young”, the debate centred on issues such as social and sexual relations, as well as the problem of teen pregnancy. Gateka noted that the discussion was an opportunity for students to be part of decision making on the issues that affect them. “The students were given a chance to act as members of parliament. This was empowering because they realised that they have the power to change by taking part in decision making,” she said. The students also tackled problems hindering gender equality, as well as solutions to address them. Students take part in the debate. (Donah Mbabazi) Some of the resolutions made included creating an enabling environment during sexuality education classes, the need for mentorship and career development. Regarding teen pregnancy, students proposed that contraceptives be distributed in schools to curb the increase in cases. Marisa Musenga, a Grade 9 student at Wellspring Academy, said regardless of the age and sex, anyone is capable of making a difference as long as they had the determination. “No matter how old we are, we can still make a difference and create a generation of equality and gender balance,” she said. Students from Gashora Girls Academy, Wellspring Academy, Cornerstone Leadership Academy, FAWE Girls Gahini, Agahozo Shalom and Riviera participated in the discussions. IAmHer Rwanda and Girl Up, both girl led initiatives, in partnership with AG Education, organised the event.
