Rwinkwavu Hospital honours staff killed in the Genocide

Medics and other employees at Rwinkwavu Hospital in Kayonza District have been asked to play their rightful role to ensure the country never experiences the same tragedy it endured 22 years ago. The call came as the hospital staff paid tribute to the colleagues killed during the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. They also used the occasion to honour all the Genocide victims as the country continues to observe 100 days of mourning. Mourners were requested to fight any form of divisionism in their workplaces and communities with speakers noting that the country cannot realise sustainable development if its people do not work together in unity. Those in attendance remembered the slain hospital staff, patients and all those who had sought refuge at the hospital only to be attacked and killed by the Interahamwe militia. The event started with a Walk to Remember from the hospital to a memorial site. There, hospital staff laid wreaths and said prayers for the victims of the Genocide. The hospital director, Dr Fulgence Nyikabahizi, said, “It is a big shame that medics were also involved in killing their patients”. In his speech, the vice mayor in charge of social affairs in Kayonza District, Jean Damascene Harerimana, called on every Rwandan to support unity and reconciliation programmes in the country.
