Ex-Nyiramasuhuko driver to be transferred to Huye to face Genocide charges

Hussein Minani, a Genocide suspect who was arrested last week after over two decades on the run, will tomorrow be arraigned before the Nyarugenge Intermediate Court for mention of his case in which he is charged with participating in the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. He is a former driver to Pauline Nyiramasuhuko, the minister in charge family promotion during the genocidal regime and the only woman to have been convicted of crimes against humanity by a UN-backed court. Before his arrest, Minani had for years lived in neighbouring Tanzania where he worked as a driver. He was arrested in Remera, a Kigali suburb having entered Rwanda using fake names and with Tanzanian documents. “His case is lined up for tomorrow at the Nyarugenge Intermediate Court, the trial will first be about detention before his transfer to Ngoma Intermediate Court in the Huye District, where the suspect committed the crimes,” said Jean Bosco Siboyintore, the Head of Genocide Fugitive tracking unit at the Rwanda Public Prosecution Authority. His transfer, according to Siboyintore, will be in line with, principles that a Genocide suspect, unless tried outside the country, that person should be tried where crimes were committed to enforce the long arm of the law and for the people to see justice being served. Minani faces four counts, which include crime of genocide, extermination, murder and rape, all committed during the Genocide when he was a driver of Nyiramasuhuko. Rwanda through Genocide Fugitive Tracking Unit department had issued an indictment against Minani last year in May. The fugitive had managed to stay at large using fake identity for many years. “We were aware that he had been coming around but because he was using pseudo names, it took a while before arresting him,” Siboyintore added. The suspect is said to have transported Interahamwe militia for mass killings in Butare and had, in person, actively participated in the killing of Tutsi students and staff at the National University of Rwanda (now University of Rwanda’s College of Arts and Social Science). editorial@newtimes.co.rw
