World Vision donates Rwf 4m to Kigali Peace Marathon

World Vision Rwanda on Friday morning handed over a Rwf 4 million cheque to sponsor the 11th edition of the Kigali International Peace Marathon scheduled to take place on May 22 in Kigali. The cheque was received by Rwanda Athletics Federation (RAF) Vice Chairman, Thomas Kajuga at the head offices of World Vision Rwanda in Kacyiru where he acknowledged the commitment of the Christian Humanitarian Non-governmental organization towards athletics development in the country and peace building. “We are very grateful to World Vision for their sincere support and have been our partners for the last five years. Their donation in particular will be channeled to rewarding the winners in both categories (Men and Women) where each will be given Rwf2 million,” He further noted this will be the first time the winners bag such a package as the event lacked enough sponsors. “Preparations so far are smooth and we expect participants from over 30 countries around the world,” he added Christine Mukamugema, the Integrated Programme Director at World Vision Rwanda who signed the cheque told Time Sport that their priority mission is peace building around the country and they are fully determined to work hand in hand with RAF to carry on supporting the event as it is one way to spread the message of peace building. “We work with different sports’ organisations around the country but we decided to put much emphasis in Peace Marathon because it offers the best way for different people to meet an interact and share peace building ideas,” said Mukamugema The theme for this year’s race is “Peace beyond the borders” MTN Rwanda also has increased the Kigali International Peace Marathon sponsorship package from Rwf58 million last year to Rwf69.75 million this year and the event is expected to attract 5000 participants. Last year Kenyan Ezekial Kemboi won the men’s full marathon and was followed by Rwandan, Jean Baptiste Ruvubi. Kenyans Peris Jerotich Toroitich, Elisabether Chemwno and Shelmith Nyawira Muriuki dominated the women’s race. Rwanda’s Jenviere Musabimana finished fourth.
