Heavy rains this morning led to the closure of the Kigali-Muhanga road after River Nyabarongo overflowed.

"Due to heavy rains experienced in the Northern Province, River Nyabarongo has overflown and this has led to the closure of the Kigali-Muhanga road,” a tweet from the Local Government and Social Affairs ministry, released earlier today, reads.

The R. Nyabarongo bridge along the Kigali-Muhanga route was, however, not submerged as earlier reports had indicated.

Meanwhile, the Ngororero-Muhanga road that had been blocked Sunday due to deadly landslides over the weekend has been reopened, the ministry said moments ago.

"Following heavy deployments by the Rwandan government and its partners, Muhanga-Ngororero road is now open for operations. We recommend careful driving,” the ministry said on its Twitter page.

Meanwhile, the Kigali-Musanze road remains closed following fatal disasters, involving floods and landslides, over the weekend, which particularly affected Gakenke District.

At least 49 people were killed by floods and landslides triggered by heavy rain experienced Saturday night.

Disaster Management and Refugee Affairs minister Seraphine Mukantabana said 42 of the victims are from Gakenke District in Northern Province alone, with the others are from Ngororero and Rubavu districts in the west and Muhanga in the south.

The disasters also saw hundreds of homes, buildings and other infrastructures destroyed, while dozens of people sustained injuries.
