Over ten clubs will compete in the sixth edition of the swimming memorial tournament slated for May 28 at Alpha Palace Hotel. The swimming competition is in line with the guidelines issued by the Ministry of Sports and Culture urging all national sports federations to organise events to remember the sportsmen and women who passed away during the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. According to Samuel Kinimba Ufitimana, the president of the National Swimming Federation, the event, dubbed “Nyabarongo Source of the Nile Memorial Swimming Competition,” will involve clubs from across Rwanda. “This year a number of clubs were formed from different parts of the country, in April we traveled around the country trying to sensitize the districts to form clubs and in the Eastern Province alone, five were formed around Lake Muhazi, specifically in Gatsibo, Kayonza, Rwamagana, Gicumbi and Gasabo,” he said. Ufitimana further said some of the clubs that had varnished were reinstated as part of the initiative to promote swimming as a sport. They are Rwamagana and University of Rwanda-Butare swimming club. Other teams that will participate in the competition include: Cool Water Swimming Club known as Indengamivumba, Sports view, Sanitas, Alpha Palace, Les Dauphins, Town S.C, Cercle Sportif de Kigali, Muhazi S C, Zenith, Beach Boys S C from Rubavu, GSOB Indatwa and Riviera S.C among others editorial@newtimes.co.rw
