The 2022 Rwanda Epic cycling race will run from November 1-5, according to the Rwanda Alternative Events (RAR) and Rwanda Cycling Federation. The five-day race will bring together international top athletes and well-trained amateurs from different countries across the globe, taking mountain bike riders from Kigali to Musanze and finally Rubavu, over technical trails, steep climbs and spectacular downhill. At least 60 riders have so far registered for the annual cycling event while organisers expect to have registered the same number of riders before the registration process closes in the next two weeks. The Riders will compete over five stages, with an overall start in Kigali and a grand finish in Rubavu. They will be spending most of the other stages in the Northern region, in the districts of Rulindo, Gakenke, Burera and Musanze. Two-time and reigning champion Jean-Eric Habimana is set to feature in this year’s edition as he looks to defend the title against veteran cyclists Nathan Byukusenge and Karl Platt. Open for amateurs While this year’s race is primed to be an even tougher event, since it takes very technical trails and climbs some of the highest and steepest hills in the country, the Rwandan Epic has this year extended with not only one extra stage on the competitive race but also two extra side events for amateurs to join. The two events include a free-of-charge social ride which will see amateurs ride together with the top riders lined up for the Rwandan Epic on October 30. There is also the Rwandan Open due on November 5,during which allows people to race with the best riders, on the exact same roads, or gives the choice to just to a loop of 30 kilometers with start and finish in Rubavu. People will be required to pay Rwf7,000 to participate in the event.
