MINEDUC vows to fight Genocide denial through research

The Ministry of Education (MINEDUC) has committed to step up efforts in carrying out research about the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. This, they believe, coupled with teaching history related to the Genocide in schools, will be critical tools in fighting genocide ideology and denial. The ministry made the commitment on Tuesday during an event to commemorate employees in the education sector who were killed during the Genocide. “Some Rwandans and foreigners are still characterised by genocide ideology; they are not happy with the recovery made by Genocide survivors and the development Rwanda has achieved in general…we are, therefore, required to put more efforts in taking measures to demystify the falsehoods peddled by such people,” the Minister for Education, Papias Musafiri, said. The minister said it is important to fight those who have taken it upon themselves to minimise and negate the Genocide. “I, therefore, request researchers and history writers, to take the lead in documenting the Genocide against the Tutsi by mainly looking at the distortions by the deniers and counter them because many are using such for political expedience,” he said. Former senator Antoine Mugesera, a scholar, spoke about measures to fight genocide ideology, and challenged the ministry to consider setting up a special body in charge of countering literature that trivialises or denies the Genocide against the Tutsi. editorial@newtimes.co.rw
